1879  -

Sunderland and District Teachers is founded by Scot James Allan, an Edinburgh school-teacher working in Sunderland.

1880  -

October: The 'and District Teachers' is dropped from Sunderland's name. Click here for more

November: Sunderland play their first competitive game when Ferryhill, from County Durham, are the visitors in the Northumberland and District Challenge Cup. The match is played at Sunderland's first ground Blue House Field. Sunderland wear blue.

1882  -

Sunderland move their home to Groves Field in Ashbrooke. They only played four games there. Click here for more.

1883  -

Sunderland move north, across the River Wear to 'the Dolly Field'.

1884  -

Sunderland move home again, this time to Abbs Field in Fulwell, close to what would become Roker Park.  Click here for more.

1885  -

Sunderland change their colours to red and white … but their famous stripes would not appear for another two years.

1886  -

Sunderland move homes again, to Newcastle Road. Click here for more.

1889  -

Sunderland apply to join the Football League but are turned down.

1890  -

Sunderland become the first new club to join the Football League, joining the dozen founder members.

1891  -

Sunderland lose 3-2 to Burnley in their inaugural League game. Click here for more.

1892  -

Sunderland are crowned champions of the Football League, and reach the FA Cup semi-finals. They become known as 'The Team of all the Talents'.

1893  - Sunderland retain their League title, becoming the first ever winners of the First Division after the League splits into two tiers. They also become the first team to score 100 League goals in a season. Click here for more.
1895  - Sunderland are crowned champions for a third time in four seasons.
1898  -

Sunderland move to their new home - Roker Park, where they stayed for 99 years.

Liverpool are the first visitors to Roker Park, a game which Sunderland won 1-0 in front of a crowd of 30,000.

1902  - Sunderland, now managed by Alex Mackie and renowned for having a mean defence, are crowned League champions for a fourth time.
